Top 5 Beaches for kids and families on the Central Coast

Break Out the Bikini and Boardies - Summer is on its way!

Over the decades, most of us Australians hold fond memories of summer holidays spent at the beach. My father in-law often will tell his own story of growing up with his 2 brothers and their most memorable times were camping in Terrigal.  Going back another generation, my Nanna actually honeymooned at The Entrance in April 1939 right before the war broke out.

My most treasured family holiday was the time my father borrowed a client’s caravan for a few days located at the Umina Beach Holiday Park.  For us, it was so different from anything else we had ever done and was pure enjoyment.  Waking up each morning to the waves crashing on the beach.  As the sun rises and sets, fishing at the water’s edge and building sand castles during the day.

Living on the Central Coast we are spoilt for choice and no matter where you live, you are only a stone’s throw away from the seashore.

The Central Coast is literally lined with beaches to suit everyone’s taste.  There are quiet secluded beaches; there are the surf beaches and the all-important family friendly beaches.  There are roughly 20 of these golden treasures in total.  For a region so close to Sydney and abundant with natural beauty, it’s hard to believe it’s not at the top of ‘Australia’s Hottest Regions’ to visit.

No matter which end of the Central Coast you go, you are likely to find a beach to suit.  Scroll down for our Top 5 Beaches on the Central Coast...

Great Beaches on the Central Coast NSW

Our top 5 beaches are:

  1. Pearl Beach - located on the southern side of Mt Ettalong.  In our opinion, it is considered a boutique area.  There is a quaint little playground with a few spots to picnic, a café on the corner, a fabulous restaurant and the beach itself is calm and rather secluded.

  2. Umina Beach - this is where we will spend our Boxing Day, Australia Day and most Sundays. This would have to be our kid’s favourite place to visit.  They love to break out their body boards and take on the waves.  It has the Peninsula Recreation Park catering for all ages, fantastic BBQ and amenities block, Surf Club Café is a great spot to grab a bite to eat and there is also the Canteen at the park.

  3. Putty Beach in Killcare - this little gem is located within the Bouddi National Park.  It is probably one of my personal favourites due to its location and spectacular scenery.

  4. Toowoon Bay - we head out here during the summer months straight from School.  We love this place to cool off and wash away the daily pressures.  At the top nestled under the shade of the trees, there is playground and BBQs. Below you have the family friendly swimming beach.  It’s a great spot to take the snorkel gear, swimming out around by the rocks.

  5. Bateau Bay Beach - located in the Wyrrabalong National Park, this beach is a great spot to take the kids to explore the rock pools.  We love to go when the tide is low and see if we can spot starfish, sea snails and other marine creatures.  During the school holidays, The Discovery Centre at Terrigal offers daytime ‘Rock Rambling tours’ here at Bateau Bay Beach.

During the summer months our beaches are patrolled by our Volunteer Surf Lifesavers.  Whatever beach you decide to visit, just remember, stay safe, slip slop ‘n’ slap and swim between the red and yellow flags.
